We seem to be seeing older people as somehow gross and disposable. A view I simply can't get on board with, and perhaps why this scene seemed so touching today, seemingly a mother and daughter, with the mother holding her daughter with one arm and leaning lightly on her stick on the other side, while quietly watching the ducks at the Kenwood Lake pond at Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath. Ventured to Hampstead Heath this afternoon. Never the best idea at the weekend when people are out in their thousands milling about and making the place look untidy. Nonetheless, the sun and the autumn colours were far too good to miss.

We had this rather lovely, leggy visitor overnight. This is Missy, a 5 month old beagle pup. Unfortunately, she couldn't stay in her old home due to a change in circumstances, so her owner surrendered her into the care of HOPE Recsue. She's great with kids and other dogs (had a great romp with a pack of about 10 dogs in the park this morning, and loved every minute!) and is certain to find a great new home with HOPE's expert help.

If you're interested in a rescue dog, please get in touch with HOPE (or a good local rescue who homecheck and neuter) and consider taking in a dog in need of a home. Most dogs are like Missy - needing a new home through no fault of their own, and will make wonderful companions for you and your family.

Plagues and Pleasures on The Salton Sea is a wonderful and slightly skewy documentary about the Salton Sea and the people who remained after the 1950's good-time crowd fled. The only DVD I've ever desperately wanted to own.

The Salton Sea. A massive inland accidental sea, created by irrigation gone drastically wrong. The beach crunches as you walk on it, and if you're curious enough to look down you'll find that the 'sand' is in fact the decaying bones of the tilapia fish that die in their thousands here when the algae blooms starve them of oxygen.

Have you noticed the prevalence of 0845 & 0870 numbers? So, it costs me 6p per minute to spend 10 minutes on hold to the bank. Nice. A geographic number would cost me... nothing. A nice chap at Virgin Media (when I complained that it was costing me a fortune calling them) gave me the details for the Say No To 0870 website.

This site has a database of geographic equivalents for 0845 and 0870 numbers, and users can add their own as they find them out. It's a fab resource for saving cash.
