Have you noticed the prevalence of 0845 & 0870 numbers? So, it costs me 6p per minute to spend 10 minutes on hold to the bank. Nice. A geographic number would cost me... nothing. A nice chap at Virgin Media (when I complained that it was costing me a fortune calling them) gave me the details for the Say No To 0870 website.

This site has a database of geographic equivalents for 0845 and 0870 numbers, and users can add their own as they find them out. It's a fab resource for saving cash.
